Choosing a blouse for your saree: neckline, sleeves and fit
4 min read
Start with comfort
A blouse that pinches under the arm or rides up will spoil the best saree. Decide first how much movement you need. If you will be dancing or serving guests, choose a slightly easier fit and avoid very deep backs that depend on a single tie.
Necklines
A round or U neck is the most versatile and works with most jewellery. A boat neck covers the collarbone and suits heavy earrings with no necklace. A V neck lengthens the upper body. A high neck or collar looks formal and replaces the need for a necklace altogether.
Sleeves
Elbow-length sleeves are comfortable in air-conditioned halls and suit silk sarees. Short and cap sleeves are cooler for summer functions. Sleeveless blouses need a precise armhole, so have a trial fitting. Puffed or full sleeves add volume and balance a plain saree.
Matching or contrast
A blouse in the border colour is the safest choice. A contrast blouse in a colour from the pallu looks more deliberate. A plain gold, black or ivory blouse can be worn with several sarees, which is useful if you are building a small wardrobe.
Checking the fit
Raise both arms: the hem should not lift more than a finger's width. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of the shoulder, not slide off. Ask the tailor to leave an extra seam allowance at the sides so the blouse can be let out later.
