How to style a western dress with Indian jewellery
3 min read · Updated 9 October 2026
Easy ways to give a plain dress a festive, Indo-western look.
Start with a simple dress
A plain or lightly printed dress in a solid colour is the best base. Clean necklines and simple sleeves leave room for jewellery. Very busy prints and embellished dresses compete with Indian jewellery rather than showing it off.
Pick one statement piece
Choose either statement earrings such as jhumkas or chandbalis, or a bold necklace, not both. Oxidised silver looks relaxed and suits cotton and linen dresses. Gold-tone and kundan-style pieces dress up satin and solid maxi dresses for the evening.
Add a dupatta or jacket
A printed or bandhani dupatta worn as a scarf, or a light embroidered jacket over the dress, instantly shifts the look towards festive. Keep the colours related so the outfit reads as one idea.
Finish with footwear and bangles
Juttis or kolhapuris tie the look together better than sports shoes. A stack of thin bangles or a single kada completes it. Keep hair and make-up simple so the jewellery remains the focus.
