Palazzo, straight pants, churidar or sharara: which bottom goes with which kurta
3 min read · Updated 9 October 2026
Simple pairings that balance length and volume.
The balance rule
Most good pairings balance volume: a flared kurta with a slim bottom, or a straight kurta with a wider bottom. When both pieces are very wide, or both very tight, the outfit usually looks less considered.
Straight and cigarette pants
These slim, ankle-length trousers work with almost every kurta, from short kurtis to long straight cuts. They are the easiest choice for office wear and show off footwear.
Palazzo
Palazzos are wide from the hip down and comfortable in heat. They look best with straight or slightly A-line kurtas that end around the knee or above; a very long, flared kurta over palazzos can swamp the frame.
Churidar and leggings
A churidar is fitted with gathers at the ankle. It is the classic partner for anarkalis and long flared kurtas, because the slim leg lets the flare stand out. Leggings do the same job for casual wear.
Sharara and dhoti pants
These are statement bottoms, so keep the kurta short to mid-length and fairly simple. They suit festive occasions more than daily wear.
