How to store a heavy lehenga
3 min read
Clean it before storing
Have the lehenga dry cleaned before it goes away for the season. Sweat, perfume and food marks that look invisible now turn into yellow stains over months and attract insects.
Fold, do not hang
A heavily embroidered lehenga can weigh several kilograms. Hanging it for long periods stretches the waistband and distorts the shape. Fold it loosely, with acid-free tissue or soft muslin between the folds so the embroidery does not rub or snag.
Wrap in cotton
Wrap the folded lehenga in a clean cotton or muslin cloth and keep it flat in a box or on a shelf. Avoid plastic covers, which trap moisture and can cause mildew and tarnish metallic thread. Keep the blouse and dupatta wrapped separately.
Protect from damp and insects
Store it in a dry cupboard away from outside walls. Use neem leaves, cloves or cedar blocks nearby rather than placing naphthalene balls directly on the fabric. Silica gel sachets help in humid months.
Air it twice a year
Every six months, take it out, air it in shade for a few hours and refold it along different lines. This prevents permanent creases and lets you catch any problem early.
