What to wear to each wedding function as a guest

Mehendi
Mehendi is usually a daytime, relaxed event where you may sit for a long time and have henna on your hands. Choose something light with short or three-quarter sleeves: a cotton or georgette kurta set, a sharara or a simple lehenga. Greens, yellows and pinks are common choices.
Haldi
Turmeric stains, so wear something you will not mind marking. Yellow and white are traditional. A plain cotton kurta set or a light suit is ideal. Keep jewellery minimal and avoid silk.
Sangeet
This is the evening for dancing, so choose an outfit you can move in. A lehenga with a manageable flare, an anarkali or a sharara set all work. Pin the dupatta securely and choose footwear you can dance in for hours.
Wedding ceremony
This is the most formal occasion. A silk saree or a richer lehenga is appropriate. Many guests avoid wearing all red, since it is often the bride's colour, and avoid all black or all white at traditional ceremonies. If you are unsure, ask the family.
Reception and packing tips
Receptions are often more contemporary: a saree in a modern drape, a gown or an elegant suit all fit. To pack lightly, repeat pieces. One blouse can go with two sarees, and changing the dupatta and jewellery makes a lehenga look new.
