Petticoat and shapewear: what to wear under a saree

How to choose the layer that holds the whole drape together.
Why the petticoat matters
The petticoat carries the full weight of the saree and decides how the drape falls. Too loose and the pleats slip; too flared and the saree looks bulky. It should sit firmly at your natural waist and end just above the ankle.
Cotton petticoat
The traditional cotton petticoat with a drawstring is breathable and grips the fabric well, which helps pleats stay tucked. Choose a straight or slightly A-line cut rather than a very flared one, and match the colour closely to the saree, especially for sheer fabrics.
Saree shapewear
Saree shapewear is a fitted, stretchy skirt, usually with a side slit for walking. It gives a smoother line under light fabrics such as georgette and chiffon. Check that you can sit and climb stairs comfortably before wearing it to a long function.
Matching the layer to the saree
For cotton and heavy silk, a cotton petticoat is the most secure. For sheer and clingy fabrics, shapewear or a satin petticoat avoids visible bunching. For a see-through saree, the petticoat colour should match exactly, or the mismatch will show through.
